This Page is dedicated to The Victorian
Gathering Place.
Come with me back the Victorian Era. A
more gentle and serene time. We go to a Sunday, that has to be my favorite day
of the week.
July 5, 2000
It is with heavy heart I announce the
closing of The Victorian Gathering Place.
I don't know why. I want to rededicate
this page to wonderful founders of The Victorian Gathering Place Mary Sue Hicks
and Michele Grabowski. You both are wonderful people! Truly of the Victorian Era
Ladies.
Sunday was a day set aside for God and
family. First Church was attended and then the afternoon spent with the whole
family in one activity or another depending on the weather. Whole families may
have gotten together to cement the family
relationships.
One of the summer time games was called
croquet. Wooden mallets were used to move a wooden ball about the size of a
softball through wires. The wires were in the shape of a horseshoe, with both
ends in the ground. Men and woman as well as children played the game. Most
often though it was the older people playing the game.
Sometimes the young women participated in
tennis.
Another summertime game was Horseshoes.
Two large metal stacks were put in the ground a great distance apart. There were
usually 6 horseshoes, 3 per team. Two teams consisting of 2 men, the men were at
separate stacks. Getting the horseshoe to go around the stake and stay there was
the highest point scored. Then the closest horse to the stake was given the next
highest score.
Sometimes romance was in the air.
Properly chaperoned of
course!
Sometimes the boys brought their little
sailboats if there was a pond near by. Or they rolled hoops with a
stick
The girls brought their jump ropes.
Sometimes they just explored to see all the flowers, birds and
squirrels.
I feel we need to return to those times
where the family spent time together. A more gentler and quality time spent.
I invite you to come by and have a
cup of tea with me at my home
Cameo Manor.
