The Story of the Christmas Bells
Bells and other Christmas noisemakers.
In pagan times bells and other noisemakers were believed to scare away
evil spirits, and they were easily obtained or made and everyone knew
how to use them.
During the darker days after the harvest or the hunt, people would engage
in ceremonies to keep bad things from happening to them while they
waited for Spring
and warmer days.
Over time, bell ringing was incorporated into other events and
activities. Bells are rung at churches to call people to gather, as
warnings, and to bring people together.
Bells toll for good times. They toll for bad times. Now bells are rung
during Christmas to announce the arrival of the season,
to proclaim the birth of Christ. Today bells play an important,
traditional role during the holiday.
Many years ago, bells and noisemakers of all kinds were used by pagans
at festivals during winter solstice. These noisemakers were used to
frighten away evil spirits in the darkness of winter. They were also
used to ward off storms and put out fires.
Later it was believed that bells had holy powers and they were tolled
during funeral processions to ward off evil spirits. As time went on,
bells became associated with celebrations. Today bells toll all over the
world on Christmas Eve ringing out the good news.
There are many legends about bells. One legend tells the story of a
village in England. The villagers had worked hard to buy their church
bells and would gather every Christmas Eve in the church to ring them.
However, a calamity occurred when an earthquake buried the church and
the bells. It is said, though, that if you truly believe, you can put
your head to the ground where the church was buried and still hear the
bells ringing on Christmas Eve!
In the movie It's a Wonderful Life, a ringing of a bell meant that an
angel got a pair of wings. |
