I have been trying to remember if I had ever heard of a 'murder' story about the Christmas family. The only killing story I can remember was one my mother told. She (Golda) and her brother , Carl were playing ' war' with corncobs. They decided to let the rooster be the enemy. They won the war but they were afraid their father would find the rooster and they might be punished for killing him. They ran to the cornfield and buried him. The next morning 'father' told them to get the 'hoe's' as they needed to clean the cornfield of weeds, and that he would join them in a few minutes. They hurried to dig up the rooster and decided to throw him in the pond nearby. But....he did'n't SINK!

My mother and her siblings , in the later years of their lives, loved to set and remember and tell stories of what they did as children. I used to say, "Mom, what would you have done to me if I had done things like you did". Her answer would always be, "do as I say, not as I do." Of course she would be laughing all the time. She told about her Dad getting ready to take the wagon into town for supplies and giving the girls (two oldest) instructions to do the evening chores. They would say, "'and then what?" after each instruction. Finally he said " then cut the tongue out of the wagon." After chores were done, they realized he had the wagon so decided to cut the tongue out of the manure spreader. They took turns 'hacking' , one would hack a while and then say "now, YOU hack". The made it about half way thru the tongue before 'Daddy' returned. He didn't reprimand them that time.

There were 5 girls and one boy. Children of John Allen Christmas b. 1879 . My mother and the youngest both passed in 94. I keep very close to those still here. They were a great family. Loved each other very much. We descendants speak of them as "those Christmas kids." ha

I've heard various stories of its origin. Some say the name originated from a man, name unknown, who had a daughter who was born on Christmas day in 1612. He named her Merry. Another story involves a group of people who left England and shipwrecked on an island a few miles from Lancaster, England, on Christmas day. The people named the island Christmas and took the names for themselves.

I'm sure there are many more stories. The first Christmas I found in the US was Dictoris/Doctoris Christmas. He settled in VA before 1624. There are a few records of him (including deeds and a will.) Unfortunately, I could find no issues listed in his Will. Of course that doesn't mean a lot. It would be great to be certain we descend from him.

I did the fireplace set myself.
Not perfect but a start. This is only my second set I have done.
